Lead Creator, Writer & Founder of Girard Illustration
Champion of Biodiversity, Equestrian, & Chocolate Connoisseur
Kristen Girard is an artist who has stared down the dark, howling winds of blindness. She is a writer who has fought against the arctic winds of conformity. She is a creator who pulls on a windbreaker and steps out into the winds of darkness with a paintbrush of light and an artist’s palette charged with love.
As an educator Kristen Girard slays ignorance by igniting curiosity and thoughtful inventiveness in her students. Her mission is to rescues creatures great (redwood tress & humpback whales), middling (wild horses & elk) and small (turtles and bees) from the unrelenting winds of apathy. Kristen is working to do this by funding efforts to enhance biodiversity, create sustainable migration corridors and safe zones for wildlife, and clean up the environment.

When not up to her elbows in creativity, Kristen loves curling up with a good book, a cup of tea, and Little Dude the Cat on her lap. If not there, Kristen can be found with carrots and apples hanging out at the stable with her Clydesdale horse, Big Mac. She loves to horseback ride through fields and forests full of birdsong and wild turkeys or ride her bike. She spends a lot of time outside defying gravity by rock climbing with her husband Kirby. During the long east coast winters, she finds skiing with her husband Kirby to be incredibly fun. Kristen freely admits that skiing in powder scares her, she actually prefers ice … it’s a side effect of skiing so long on the dust on crust skiing conditions often found at Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondack Park.
Gravity Defier, Art Supply Runner, & Time Keeper
Kirby is a devout rock climber and boulder, and is always trying to convert Kristen to his calling. Kirby and Kristen are happily married partners in life’s adventures. As a high elevation reference specialist and gravity defier, Kirby makes sure that Kristen ventures out of the studio periodically to find creative inspiration rock climbing and skiing. He often wishes for Kristen to stop wasting time with the "silly horsey stuff". He’ll never convince her to stop riding, but she goes along with the rock climbing so she can earn chocolate cake points, and get dragon in flight perspective photographs. Kirby is in charge of making sure they actually reach their adventure destination, which can be a tough task when Kristen has her camera or sketch book ready for action. She always wants to stop to draw or photograph for "just a little bit". ;) Once back in the studio Kirby makes sure Kristen has everything she needs for her current creative endeavors.
Inspiration, Fresh Air Coordinator, & Carrot Enthusiast
Big Mac is Kristen's trusty steed – and the reason she doesn't live in NYC. He is a seventeen hand, Clydesdale draft horse gelding who self identifies as a misunderstood thoroughbred racehorse. He loves to run, jump, and eat carrots. Lots and lots of carrots. Big Mac enjoys taking Kristen on trail rides when she seeks inspiration, though his main focus on these rides is snatching as much grass as possible. He often poses for reference drawings and photographs (including this one!) in exchange for peppermints. Big Mac is very emphatic about this! No peppermints = no photographs. Though he will accept apples if no peppermints are handy.
Studio Supervisor, Lap Warmer, & Undercover Agent
Little Dude is Kristen and Kirby's not-really-that-brave cat who makes a point of supervising Kristen's artwork creation and writing every step of the way. When not watching birds or hunting the laser pen light, he can be found under a pile of blankets catnapping. Little Dude is fascinated by printers and tries to grab the paper with his teeth before it finishes printing. He is also not really sorry for throwing up on Kristen's computer that one time, he is a cat after all. Little Dude knows that a good lap and purrrrrr session overcomes all of life's big, and little, mishaps.
