Painting Air Magic from the Natural Magic Collection - Part 2

The painting starts to take shape!

The process of oil painting often feels like magic! A little bit of color here, a little bit of color there... and the painting starts to take on a life of it's own!

Blending colors is one of my ( many! ;) favorite parts of painting. Here I'm laying down the color foundation of the Air Magic illustration. The way I paint involves many layers of color that gradually build up to create lovely subtle color variations that bring the subject to painted life. At this stage it important to set the overall color mood, direction, and tonality.

If you look at the palette underneath the painting you can see how I create a range of color variations from light to dark. Mixing the color on the palette, instead of directly on the painting surface, allows the color to be more vibrant when the painting is finished. Once the color is applied to the painting I do blend the colors together, ever so softly so that they reflect how colors often merge in life.

Stay tuned for Part 3 of the behind the scenes sneak peeks of the making of the Air Magic illustration!
